Perfectly safe: No issues with MRI and knee or hip replacement, except that if the MRI is of the area that has the replacement there will be some distortion of the image due to the metal.

The MRI will heat up the body slightly and can created focal hot spots around all metals. With joint replacements that have been recently performed, there are concerns for damage of the healing interfaces, which delays or adversely effects healing. MRI should be avoided for 2 months or so to allow for healing. And of course, any MRI of a joint which has been replaced with metal will be limited.
