Ambien (zolpidem): Safe if taken as prescribed. Other options can include Melatonin, Lunesta, or Rozerem (ramelteon).

AvoidTheDeepSleep: This is a tough one. Lots of people are taking nightly doses of various "sleep aids." Often for good reasons. But none are intended nor should be used for the long-term. And Ambien (zolpidem) is one squirrely drug! Not so much about death as in dependence, personality changes and rebound if not used. To "usually" take something for sleep is its own problem. Best to find a natural workaround.Talk to your doc

Psych Consult ?: If you are in normal physical condition & not taking alcohol or drugs or any meds that your doctor doesn't know about there is no danger of dying from one Ambien (zolpidem) pill. But a 20 YO shouldn't need to take Ambien (zolpidem) on a regular basis . There may be psychological reasons why you are having trouble with sleep. It might be a good idea to see a psychiatrist &consider if therapy and/or meds are indicated.

Try biofeedback: Try toAvoid drugs for sleep, weight loss, nervousness, anxiety and wait gain. Usually try behavior modification, punctuality in sleeping, read a book and warm milk if u like. Avoid caffeine, drinking, TV in room. Do regular exercise and get busy with ur studies or work. Don’t dx yourself. Once on drugs for sleep u may find it hard to regain ur self control. Use drugs only if a MD dx of symptomatic insomnia.

Comments: Am not clear why at age 21 you are taking Ambient. There are risks, especially sleep walking and tolerance, which can worsen your sleep issues further. I far prefer OTC Melatonin, but perhaps the best approach is to have your sleep issues further evaluated.
