Forgive my frankness: The real herxheimer reaction results from the killing of large numbers of micro-organisms deep in the tissues by antimicrobial agents. Classically seen in the treatment of advanced syphilis, it's also been reported in other diseases with huge bacterial loads such as bartonellosis. Today's medical quacks diagnose a "herxheimer reaction" whenever one of their own products makes somebody sick.
