If you have a kidney that is functioning low will it cause pain and could that pain be on your left side and low back just above the waist?

Maybe : A "low functioning" kidney, by itself, should not cause pain. BUT, a kidney infection or a kidney stone COULD cause exactly the kind of pain you're having. Either way, it must be evaluated by your physician ASAP to make sure it's not something serious.
