Muscle strain.: There are multiple muscles in that area that may be strained. It would make sense, since it bothers you when lifting something and stops when you sit. This is only one possibility. Please see a non-surgical sports medicine specialist, who could give you an accurate diagnosis.

Oblique strain: Sounds like you have an oblique strain. It could also be a low back problem, likely muscular. Occasionally the it band will also get irritated. I would recommend stretching, heating pad and nsaids. If not better see a doc.
