Only swimmers ear: A true inner ear infection requires fluid accumulated behind the eardrum (usually due to the negative eustachian tube pressure from a cold). A swimmers ear is an outer ear infection due to swimming and involves the outer ear canal. The two entities are entirely different and require different treatments
