Rule out tumor: Tender knots on head could be inflamed cysts or skin malignancies. If there is associated lymph nodes these could be drainage from infected lesions or spread from malignant skin tumors which are enlarging. See surgeon to consider bx of head lesions. That will tell you what the cervical nodes are and what kind of treatment necessary to resolve issue.
