Nerve injury: Sounds like there may be nerve injury, either from direct trauma like a hammer, or chronic repetitive stress like carpal tunnel. It's also possible there is a virus that is inflaming the nerve like herpes simplex which can affect the hand, but there is usually a rash or blisters with that.
