Symptoms can last: for awhile if acid reflux is untreated and there are no changes to your diet. If you have acid reflux, you can use an over the counter antacid (e.g., Tums), acid blocker (e.g., Pepcid or Tagamet) or a proton-pump inhibitor (e.g., Prevacid (lansoprazole) or Nexium) to help but you also need to cut out the causes - e.g.,spicy, tobacco, caffeine, etc. If none of this works, see your doctor for an exam.
