Duct not patent : Hi Dorothy. Your 9 month old is healthy but like many other kids that come to see ophthalmologists he has a lacrimal duct that is not patent. Usually hand massage and antiobiotic ointment helps open the distal end of this duct that connects the eye to our nose. So surgery is only recommended after child is one years old. Please visit with an Eye MD for specific instruction and complete exam.
