Allergies/postnasal : postnasal drop causing morning phlegm is very common in people with allergies. However, mouth breathers at night and a recent cold may also contribute. Clean your house vents. And, have your doctor evaluate your airways, sleep habits, and allergy status. In the meantime, try sleeping with head of bed a bit elevated and try otc nasal strips? Good luck!

Phlegm builds up: at night from your nose and chest. Sleep may not allow you to cough and clear phlegm out normally compared to when you're awake. Your family doctor and Healthtap can suggest ways you can treat this condition.
