on occasion i will wake up in the morning and spit phlegm and its dark. perhaps old blood. its is just in the first spit and that's the only time. ok?

Phlegm: You surmise correctly that the phlegmis old blood. You may have a post nasal drip and the mucus has eroded the blood vessels in your nose to account for the blood. Try using saline nose drops before bedtime to avoid the problem.
