Discuss with dentist: If the pulp was compromised, then yes you do need RCT if you want to save the tooth. As we did not clinically examine you nor have x-rays of the tooth in question, we really can't give you a better answer other than to advise that you discuss this issue with your own dentist. The amount of decay, position of the tooth, size\location of the nerve, occlusion + a myriad of other factors play a role.

A few thoughts..: It was most certainly not in your dentist's treatment plan to have that tooth need root canal therapy. Depending on the extent of the decay or old restorations or angle of the tooth the nerve may have become irreversibly inflamed after the procedure. Without this knowledge it is unfair to pass judgement. Trust plays a vital role in every relationship. Discuss your concerns with your provider.

Very common: Once you have pulp exposure and irreversible pulpitis, there’s no cure. The only way to fix it is to have a root canal treatment performed by your dentist or endodontist.
