Rashes: Rashes are caused from infection, allergy or skin disorders. Your son's rash sounds like a viral rash and will probably last 7-10 days and go away. Specifically this maybe hand foot and mouth diease which spreads like your description. There is sore throat and fever with it as well as irritability. If it persists or he seems sicker you may want your pediatrician to evaluate him.

Viral skin rash : If your son is not running a fever he is most likely has a viral skin rash which will resolved in a few days. If he has a fever he needs to see the doctor.
