Research is ongoing: Genes in the body can make a person more susceptibe to getting these type of conditions. It is thought that predisposed people then get primed after an infection or environmental trigger (no one knows for sure which ones). Then the immune system starts responsing against tissue in our bodies as if they are viruses or bacteria. There is nothing a patient or person does to cause this.
