Varied: Some are drug or toxin induced, but others occur without any known predisposition. Women appear to be more susceptible than men, but there are few other predictors. There is also some genetic component for certain autoimmune illnesses.

Research is ongoing: Genes in the body can make a person more susceptibe to getting these type of conditions. It is thought that predisposed people then get primed after an infection or environmental trigger (no one knows for sure which ones). Then the immune system starts responsing against tissue in our bodies as if they are viruses or bacteria. There is nothing a patient or person does to cause this.
