What can a doctor determine from fetal cardiac activity?

How Baby is doing: Fetal Heart rate first noted at ~5weeks. At that time approx same rate as mother. At ~ 9 weeks Fetal rate is ~175 +/-. This remains high throughout pregnancy. This is one of the factors followed to suggest Baby doing OK, along with blood flow to fetus and amount of amniotic fluid. In fetal distress Heart rate may increase or decrease. Decrease is not a good sign and must be addressed.
