How does a fetus breathe inside its mother's belly?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Breathing movement..: You breath by moving your diaphram up and down drawing air in and pushing air out of your lungs. On ultrasound it is possible to watch the baby's lungs and diaphram and see "breathing movements". When the baby's diaphragm goes down, it draws fluid into the lungs; and when it moves up fluid is forced out. This is very important for lung developement. Best wishes!
