What are doctors testing when they shine a light in someone's eye?

Many things.: Most doctors test how well your eyes are transmitting light to your brain, which is determined by how well your pupils react to light. If you have blurred vision but your pupils react briskly to light that means that your retina and optic nerves are working well. Eye doctors (ophthalmologists and optometrists) use other lights to also examine the anatomy of your eye, both inside and outside.
