A 48-year-old member asked:

how does puberty affect someone's mental health?

Puberty: With raging hormones, increasing responsibilities, peer pressure, and adulthood just around the corner, all of the above combine to stress the adolescent experiencing all of the above. What makes it easier is ongoing communication and negotiation with transitioning into a new body, mindset, social milieu, and the adult world.

A 26-year-old member asked:

If someone begins puberty early, will this mean that they will be shorter in the end?

Yes and no: Puberty is more a transition with a variable speed and intensity than signal of the end of growth. Some kids move quickly thru stages in a few years & some take about 7. The pattern of puberty often follows that of a parent but eventual linear growth is defined more by bone maturity than age or pubertal signals. A bone age study & growth records can give you an idea how of how tall a kid will get.
A 34-year-old member asked:

Does the hymen go away after puberty?

3 doctor answers9 doctors weighed in
Dr. James Ferguson
Pediatrics 46 years experience
The short answer:NO: The hymen is a structure that acts as a partial gate to sensative vaginal skin before the hormones of puberty thicken the vaginal walls. Before puberty the skin may breakdown with trauma & easily bleed & get infected. After hormonal changes this is less likely. After puberty the hymen may have a small or large opening. The opening will be stretched or broken during solo or partner sexual activity.

Is it true that if you start puberty 3 years late, you will end looking 3 years younger in the long run?

Hmmmm: Interesting idea/myth. Mostly all these factors are life style and genetics dependent. Exercise, eat properly, sleep well, avoid tobacco, nicotine and drugs and you'll increase your chances of attaining these goals.
A 31-year-old member asked:

Whats the chance of dying from sickle cell disease before reaching puberty?

Dr. Humberto Rivas
Pediatrics 34 years experience
Low: A well managed, well controlled sickle cell disease patient should have a live expentancy past their 5th decade of life. This is obviously in patients/children that are receiving the specialized and up-to-date medical care they need. Complications and early mortality is a possibility, but so it is dying in a car accident or getting the flu.

A 31-year-old member asked:

My daughter is in puberty, how should I talk to her about it?

Dr. David Finke

Puberty is normal.: Every girl's body changes when she transforms for a girl to a woman. Changes are normal and will involve increase in body hair, breast enlargement, and monthly vaginal bleeding. It is very important to emphasize that at this time, she is capable of becoming pregnant-if you aren't comfortable talking with her about this, then refer to a pediatrician or gynecologist who can. Education=better health.
