Bursitis: The suprapatellar bursa/fluid-filled sac can be found just under the upper knee cap/patella which extends upward to the quadriceps muscle. This can become inflamed after injury from a fall or from overuse including running. Possibly the position of lying down at night makes it more symptomatic. Anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen may help; you may need an injection. See orthopedist.
