Yes: Overall the elliptical machine is cardio machine that is low impact on the joints and back if done correctly. Swimming and water aerobics are other forms of low impact exercise that should be ok with herniated discs.

Back and exercise: Exercise with a herniated disc depends on the severity of the problem. If there is weakness from a pronounced sciatica a low impact workout on an elliptical may be all that is able to be tolerated. The elliptical protects against falls by guiding the path of the legs.If the herniated disc has caused numbness or tingling, you may be able to do more. See your Dr., get a formal exam& recommendations.

Ask your back: it should be fine, mainly need to avoid lifting heavy weight. Staying active, building flexibilty, strength, and losing weight are good for backs. If you back feels worse after workout, you may need to work with physical therapist to figure out safe exercises.

Much lower impact : Than jogging or running. But you have to see how your back does while using an elliptical. Often swimming is the best tolerated.
