Running: Both are effective, but it would best to use the elliptical machine on a hot day in air conditioning rather than get dehydrated running long distance outside.

Either is fine.: They're both effective forms of physical activity and cardiovascular conditioning. How about mixing them up - run when the weather is nice and use the elliptical when the weather is inclement.
