Safe under 5mg: Melatonin is very effective for a variety of conditions especially insomnia. In low doses less than 5mg , I have seen very few side effects. It can sometimes raise blood pressure and overthink the blood so monitor for these potential issues and as always follow up with your doctor. If Sleep issues persist get labs checked Vit D, thyroid screen and potentially a sleep study to be through.
