Tears: Significant tears of structures in the knee are usually accompanied by swelling, tenderness and,at times discoloration. However minor tears may have pain only. See an orthopedic surgeon if pain worsens or persists after resting the knee for a week. Applying cold applications intermittently for 48 hours and then switching to heat, taking NSAIDS like ibuprofen may help.
