Yes: Most people have (/or will have) more than one medication that will help reduce their symptoms. Most find the non-stimulant as effective as stimulant, often w/less side effects. Talk to your dr about options.

Complex question: There are many classes of non-stimulant "adhd" meds some of which may target some adhd symptoms more than others - just take a look at adhd criteria - even stimulant medications can impact different cognitive functions at different levels. By and large stimulant meds are effective in 70% of adhd cases, a claim few other medications have been able to match in controled studies.

Non-stimulant meds: Vast majority of research on this and generally accepted truth amongst myself and my colleagues is that stimulant medications are generally more effective. For example effect sizes with Vyvanse are significantly higher than any other medication in a recent study. That said everyone responds differently and may need different things from a medication so have to try on case by case basis.
