Anesthetic cream?: A mild anesthetic cream might help, with active ingredient benzocaine. But not an "anti-itch" cream with hydrocortisone, which could delay healing. Brief treatment (1-2 days) with acyclovir or valacyclovir can speed healing if started at the very beginning of an outbreak, before it blisters. Even better, take either drug continuously to prevent outbreaks. Talk with doctor about a prescription.
