Painful thyroid: You need to be examined by your doctor and you will probably need some x-ray imaging.

Duration?: Hi. How long has this gone on for? There is a condition called a painful thyroiditis that is usually self-limited, resolving within a few months. I have had patients with chronic thyroid tenderness, however. I hope yours is the more common, self-limited variety. Are your TSH and free T4 normal on your dose of levothyroxine? Sometimes NSAIDs such as ibuprofen can help the pain. Good luck!
