No simple : Answer. Gland tissue is white and so are calcifications. The radiologist takes all this into account, in addition to any symptoms/physical exam concerns, when reading the mammogram.

Calcium: When tissues age or when they develop tumors the calcium can settle in the tissue. Calcium shows up white on the x-ray. If the doctor is concerned they will probably have you have a magnified view of this area.
