See below: Polycythemia vera (PV) is characterized by uncontrolled production of red blood cells along with specific JAK2 gene mutation and decreased EPO level. Essential thrombocythemia (ET) comes with uncontrolled elevation in platelet count. JAK2 mutation occurs only in 50% of ET. Bone marrow biopsy may be required for the diagnosis of ET. Both are clonal myeloproliferative neoplasms.
