Butterfly needles: The butterfly needle is superior in taking blood from an infant or child. It is also used for adults and older people with difficult veins. Most likely, you wont even have to ask!

Don't ask: Please forgive my frankness. If you start telling health care professionals how to do their jobs based on something you read on the internet -- even from us -- they will resent it. And they will be right to feel this way. You are probably also a professional who takes pride in your work. Do you like being told what to do, as if you didn't already know yourself? I don't think needle type matters.

Whatever they like: It is certainly not the easiest thing to do with success. However, those that do it for a living develop preferred equipment for different draws depending on multiple factors. Your job is to comfort the kid, not make demands on the staff. If you even bring it up, you may jinx the process. For the kids sake, leave this alone.
