Helicobacter pylori: H pylori is in most people an asymptomatic infection that never causes problems throughout a lifetime. A minority of patients can develop gastritis or ulcers, and very rare patients develop a type of gastric cancer. At this time, we do not recommend testing for this bacteria in the absence of symptoms.
