Precordial catch: This is a relatively common occurrence termed "precordial catch". The exact cause is unknown but it is felt to be when a dry spot on the lung lining sticks to the wall of the chest and the stretching when you breathe in causes the sharp pain . These are benign and will do no harm but they are dramatic. The best way to handle it is to "bite the bullet" and rapidly breathe in deeply.
