How does bus par work differently than lexapro, (escitalopram) and why would one work and the other not?

Different chemical..: Different chemicals in the same class have different effect/side effect profile. Add to it individual variation of response to the chemical......It is not a perfect science yet to match med to the person with disease....

Diff neurotranmitter: The exact mechanism of action of Buspar (buspirone) is unknown but it does react to serotonin & dopamine receptors. Lexapro (escitalopram) is better understood to be a SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) meaning it inhibits the nerve cells reuptake of serotonin allowing more to circulate. It has little effect on dopamine. Each person's inherent brain chemistry determines which meds work.
