A member asked:

Do laxatives (used carefully of course) help with the pre-existing stool and constipation, or only provide relief for stool formed thereafter?

Both: More fiber-containing foods is largely preventive. Safest bulking agents, i.e. psyllium may help add water to stool & works in 12-72 hours. Lubricants/mineral oil makes the stool more slippery & works in 6-8 hrs. Hydrating agents (MOM, epsom salts) concentrate more water within stool & works in 30 min-6 hrs. Glycerin supps/lactulose take 30 min-3 hrs. Use stimulants/cascara,senna with caution.
