Hunger pain defined: Sensation of hunger is related to contractions of stomach muscles & lead to hunger pangs if severe. Triggered by hormone Ghrelin (released if blood sugar drops with prolonged fasts). Hormones Peptide YY & Leptin cause the reverse--the sensation of being full. Irregular meals make hunger pangs worse; older adults may have less violent stomach contraction. Peptic disease may also mimick hunger pain.
