Beractant: It is a natural surfactant material extracted from bovine (cattle) lungs. Surfactant is a mix of proteins and lipids that naturally exists in our lungs to prevent complete collapse on exhaling. This material does not form till near end of pregnancy ( more than 34-35 weeks). Preterm babies who demonstrate evidence of significant RDS after birth are given beractant to help overcome the condition.
