What babies are at risk of developing the neonatal respiratory distress syndrome?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Resp. distress syndr: Its caused by deficiency of surfactant that lines the airways&lung immaturity. From baby being premature vs genetic protein def. Varies in severity form baby to baby & some may require ventilatory support. Depends on gestational age from about 50% in babies born at 26–28 weeks, to about 25% at 30–31 weeks. Is more frequent in infants of diabetic mothers & in the second born of premature twins.
