TMJ: Night guards are best for 90% of patients however you may consider orthodontics if your teeth do not come together properly. An orthodontist will make sure your TMJ is in the correct position and is not painful. They will align your teeth into a night guard/protected occlusion. Hope this helps.

Can help: Nightguards often help. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. Physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.

Sometimes, yes: The most important thing however is to have your condition diagnosed properly by a qualified professional, such as Orofacial Pain specialist. They are the experts and strongly recommend first using the most conservative, reversible and noninvasive treatments possible.
