Marrow signal: It is normal to have edema on an MRI if you have or had osteomyelitis. Edema refers to a change in the signal characteristics of the bone marrow from normal. When a vertebrae gets infected, which is what osteomyelitis is, the signal of the marrow changes in the inflammatory process that the body uses to fight the infection. This normalizes over several months after the infection is cured.
