Sorry: That should not have happened but did. Donor bone, usually from cadavers, has been sterilized and cultured to prove sterility. Wound infections are rare but a statistical reality and sometimes it does not happen to someone else. Thank heaven that you are young and that we have many powerful and effective antibiotics. A consoling factor is when you are cured the fusion should be very strong.

NOT COMMON: Is it common? What defines "common?" More than 50% of the time? So, no it's not common, or none of us would do surgery! It's an unfortunate consequence of surgery. A small number of people develop infection, frequently for no known reason. Follow your doctor's advice to the letter! Good luck. Dr. Latva
