Need to follow up.: The AST and ALT are enzymes located in many cells of the body, most commonly used to check the liver. when they are abnormal, the most important thing to do is to avoid alcohol and have them rechecked in 3-4 weeks. You should talk to the doctor who had the tests performed to arrange this. If they are still abnormal, further testing will be necessary. It is important not to ignore this. Good luck.

It depends..: It depends on exactly how high they are and what your doctor felt on examination of your liver (did he/she feel it was enlarged/painful?). Sometimes this can mean you have viral or autoimmune hepatitis, toxicity from drugs or other toxins, alcoholic liver disease, and a list of other possibilities. You need to have a serious discussion about this with your treating physician to discuss next steps.
