Venous return.: In general, swelling (edema) in your ankles is due to poor venous return. This can be due to a variety of conditions, and can also occur in certain normal circumstances. I recommend you discuss it with your primary care provider.

Incompetent valves: But swelling of ankle could be a sign of cardiovascular or kidney disease so a visit to the doctor is a good idea for complete evaluation.
