Swelling is normal: Mild to moderate residual swelling after an ankle sprain can actually last for several weeks. Rest, ice, compression and NSAIDs may all help. Physical therapy may also expedite recovery.

Torn ligaments: Ankle sprains involve tearing of ligaments, usually with hematoma (bruising) formation. Sprains are graded by degree and can include complete rupture. The bruising and subsequent swelling occurs from the torn ligaments that are not healed fully in just a couple of weeks. Continue compression and RICE therapy until swelling fully resolves to avoid recurrent chronic ankle sprains.
