Torn ligaments: Ankle sprains involve tearing of ligaments, usually with hematoma (bruising) formation. Sprains are graded by degree and can include complete rupture. The bruising and subsequent swelling occurs from the torn ligaments that are not healed fully in just a couple of weeks. Continue compression and RICE therapy until swelling fully resolves to avoid recurrent chronic ankle sprains.
