Inflammation: "Soreness" or inflammation of the musculature is an expected response to working out. If he is in good shape and doesn't feel any "popping" or "tearing" sounds during exercise he should be fine. Ice and appropriate dosed ibuprofen can assist in extreme soreness. It may be best to start his work out routine with a more experienced trainer.
