Recent test shows i have high triglycerides of 425 and have started atorvastatin 10 mg. should i get retested in 6 months to check if meds are working?

YES: However: atorvastatin is a better medication to lower LDL cholesterol(bad) than it is to lower triglycerides. When triglycerides levels are high, your doctor needs to be sure that you do not have either diabetes or hypothyroidism. Also if you need to improve TG, be sure you minimize the alcohol intake and do not drink ANY alcohol for 3-5 days prior to your blood test.
