Compresses: Ideal first treatment of a boil would be warm compresses to encourage it to come to a head and self-drain. Barring this, a surgical incision and drainage may be needed if it is especially large.

Abscess Treatment: An abscess is a tender mass generally surrounded by a colored area from pink to deep red. Abscesses are often easy to feel by touching. The middle of an abscess is full of pus and debris. http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/abscess#1

Short term/long term: You can start by applying moist heat to the area, which improves blood flow & may bring the boil to the skin surface. If so it can drain on it's own and may self heal. If it continues to enlarge & interferes with your activities you may need it drained in the office.
