See the Doctor NOW!: Metformin does not come in 5mg doses. Therefore, i think it is more likely Glyburide of glipizide. These medication can be dangerous to young children. Give him some sugary juice now and go to the nearest emergency room to be monitored!

No 5 mg pills: There are no 5 mg metformin pills, only 500, 850 and 1000. They are all fairly large and would be unusual for a two year old to swallow, but possible. Shouldn't harm him, but may give some diarrhea. Are you sure it wasn't some other medication that comes in 5mg size? Hopefully you have contacted his pediatrician long ago.
