Ulcer: See your dentist . There are several ways to relieve the pain of an ulcer depending on what kind of ulcer and what caused it. Most common mouth ulcers will heal in 7-10 days. Orabase ointment is an oral bandage that can be placed over the ulcer during meals. It can be purchased in any pharmacy without a prescription.

Aphthous ulcer: Or canker sore. Recurrent minor aphthae can coalesce into major aphthous ulcerations that can be very painful, interfere with speech, swallowing, or other functions depending on the site. My rule: leave them alone they go away in two weeks; treat them and they go away in 15 days. I avoid numbing gels because they increase the risk of trauma to the lesion. Ndaids work great. See dentist for help.
