Sleep apnea: He may have sleep apnea. If he has gained weight lately, has a large tongue or large tonsils, or is taking sleeping pills he may be getting obstruction of airflow through his mouth and airways. He should see his primary care physician for further testing.

Sleep apnea?: Your husband may have obstructive sleep apea - a condition commonly associated with snoring, and waking up gasping during sleep. The loose tissues of the back of the throat relax, and create a partial obstruction to the flow of oxygen. Over time, this can result in increased risks of high blood pressure, heart rhythm problems, etc. But it's easily diagnosed in a sleep lab, and treatable with cpap.
